World Scientific congratulates Professor Steven Chu, 1997 Nobel Laureate in Physics, who has been nominated Secretary of Energy - designate by U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.

World Scientific collaborated with Prof Chu in 2001/2002 to publish the Proceedings of the XV International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy. In December 1998 World Scientific launched a Nobel Laureate Public Lecture series. Prof Chu was invited to Singapore to deliver the first lecture for this series. The topic of his talk is "The How and Why of Laser Cooling and Trapping of Atoms".

Prof Chu is also an international advisory board member of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Nanyang Technological University. Professor K K Phua, the Chairman of World Scientific Publishing, is the founding director of this institute.
