Louis Chen is awarded Chevalier de I'Ordre des Palmes Academiques

World Scientific author Professor Louis Chen has received the title of Chevalier de I'Ordre des Palmes Academiques from the French government for his contribution to relations between France and Singapore within the academic field. Founded by Napolean Bonaparte in 1808 to recognize accomplishment in the areas of education, the Academic Palms honors excellence and dedication in the areas of teaching, scholarship and research. The Palms is conferred on both French citizens and citizens of other countries for their exemplary service in promoting French culture and education around the world. Since 1955, the Academic Palms have been bestowed by the French Minister of National Education.

Currently serving as director of the National University of Singapore's Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (California), Professor Chen has made many significant contributions to Mathematical teaching and research. In particular, he is known as the father of the Chen-Stein method, which has grown into one of the most important areas of discrete probability with diverse applications in such fields as molecular biology, random graphs, computer science, extreme value theory and probabilistic number theory.

Actively engaged in World Scientific's publishing activities, Professor Chen is Series Editor of the Lecture Notes Series, Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore. He is co-editor of An Introduction to Stein's Method, as well as the forthcoming Stein's Methods and Applications.
