Outstanding JC Science Student
to attend Nobel Prize Award Ceremony

The ICAAS Most Outstanding Junior College Science Student Award is presented annually to an outstand-ing junior college science student who has the best academic achievement in science, the best ability to explain scientific results, and the best attitude to address difficult problems and issues.

This year’s winner, Ng Qin Xiang, from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) will represent Singapore at the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar held annually in December in Stockholm, Sweden, in conjunction with the Nobel Prize Award Presentation Ceremony. Qin Xiang will get the opportunity to interact with other young scientific talents, visit Swedish science institutes, attend the Nobel lectures and participate in the Nobel festivities. The objectives are to stimulate interest in and enhance knowledge of scientific issues, and promote international understanding and friendship through such scientific and cultural exchanges between students.

Ng Qin Xiang was selected in a two-round process. In the first round, the Ministry of Education shortlisted about 20 qualified candidates. In the second round, a panel of eminent scientists and educators selected the final winner.

Qin Xiang has shown a strong and sustained passion in science and learning. His knowledge of microbiology is significantly beyond what is expected of a JC student. While he encountered a number of difficulties in some of his projects, he demonstrated a high degree of resourcefulness and independence in overcoming them. He further impressed the judges with his ability to present his thoughts clearly. His project on orange peels as a biosorbent for metal ions won a gold medal at the 2011 Singapore Science & Engineering Fair and second place at the 2011 International Science & Engineering Fair. Qin Xiang also has an open gregarious personality. He will be a good representative of Singapore at the 2011 Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar, as well as an excellent role model for other students to aspire to.

EPS HEP Conference
Grenoble, France, 21-28 July 2011

World Scientific Publishing and Imperial College Press were delighted to attend the 35th International Euro-physics Conference on High Energy Physics in Grenoble, France, in the Rhône-Alpes region in late July this year. Held at the Alpes Congrès, Alpexpo, the conference was attended by over 700 delegates.

EPS-HEP is one of the major international conferences that review every second year the state of our knowledge of the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions. For a full week, results obtained in terrestrial laboratories or through observations of the Universe were confronted with the most recent theoretical developments. Advances in particle detection and in acceleration techniques were also presented. EPS-HEP 2011 was the first major world conference after extensive operation of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at an energy of 7 TeV, and one of the last before the final shutdown of the Tevatron collider scheduled in September 2011. Reports of new and potentially exciting observations made at LHC, at other international laboratories and from programs in astroparticle physics and cosmology were made.

It was another successful conference for the international community of particle physics. World Scientific Publishing enjoyed meeting with these great minds, some of whom are their authors, and is eagerly awaiting the next conference to be held in 2012.

Ms Carol Ann Cheah
The New Scholar of World Scientific

"I'm more than delighted to have received the World Scientific Scholarship. Coming from a typical middle-class family, it’s a massive help to myself and my folks with regards to the costs of studying at Imperial College. Not only will it enable me to fully immerse myself in the whole university experience, it’ll also bring me a step closer to my dream of making a difference in the field of BME (Biomedical Engineering)."

The scholarship award which is open for application to students who have a place at the Imperial College London, will benefit successful applicants from Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

It includes a disbursement of £5000 (about US$8,000) per annum for a period of up to four years on a performance renewable basis and upon graduation, the student will be granted an internship at World Scientific.
