AFTER THE BEGINNING
A Cosmic Journey through Space and Time
edited by Norman K Glendenning (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA)

In a brilliant flash about 14 billion years ago, time and matter were born in a single instant of creation. An immensely hot and dense universe began its rapid expansion everywhere, creating space where there was no space and time. In the intense fire just after the beginning, the lightest elements were forged, later to form primordial clouds that eventually evolved into galaxies, stars, and planets. This evolution is the story told in this fascinating book. Interwoven with the storyline are short pieces on the pioneering men and women who revealed those wonders to us.

CONFORMATIONAL PROTEOMICS OF MACROMOLECULAR ARCHITECTURE
Approaching the Structure of Large Molecular Assemblies and Their Mechanisms of Action
(With CD-Rom)
edited by R Holland Cheng & Lena Hammar (Karolinska Institutet, Sweden)

The assembly of large molecular complexes creates dynamic features that would only be feasible in a large construct. The biological implications of such adaptation will be explored as it applies to the static quasisymmetry situations, as well as to the dynamics of structural transitions. The current wealth of solved high-resolution complex structures makes this an appropriate time to summarize the state of the art in structural dynamics of living architectures. With contributions by leading scientists in the fields of virology, bacterial flagellum, cytoskeleton, ribosome and giant enzymes, this important book presents cutting-edge knowledge in the various fields of structural proteomics of very large molecular assemblies, with the focus on their mechanisms of action.

Advanced Series on Ocean Engineering - Vol. 23
THEORY AND APPLICATIONS OF OCEAN SURFACE WAVES
by Chiang C Mei (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA) &
Michael Stiassnie (Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Israel)

This book is an expanded version of The Applied Dynamics of Ocean Surface Waves. It presents theoretical topics on ocean wave dynamics, including basic principles and applications in coastal and offshore engineering as well as coastal oceanography. Advanced analytical and numerical techniques are applied, such as singular perturbations. In this expanded edition, two chapters on recent developments have been added: one is on multiple scattering by periodic or random bathymetry, and the other is on Zakharov’s theory of broad spectrum wave fields. New sections include topics on infragravity waves, upstream solitons, Venice storm gates, etc. In addition, there are many new exercises.

A JOURNEY WITH FRED HOYLE
An Autobiographical Story of Progress towards a Theory of Cosmic Life
by Nalin Chandra Wickramasinghe (Cardiff University, UK)

This book recounts the author’s unique scientific journey with one of the most remarkable men of 20th century science. The journey begins in Sri Lanka, the author’s native country, with his childhood acquaintance with Fred Hoyle’s writings. The action then moves to Cambridge, where the famous Hoyle-Wickramasinghe collaborations begin. A research program, started in 1962 on the carbonaceous nature of interstellar dust, leads to further developments which prompts Hoyle and the author to postulate the organic theory of cosmic dust (which is now generally accepted). They then challenge one of the most cherished paradigms of contemporary science - the theory that life originated on Earth in a warm primordial soup.

ANALYTIC NUMBER THEORY
An Introductory Course
by Paul T Bateman & Harold G Diamond (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

This valuable book focuses on a collection of powerful methods of analysis that yields deep number-theoretical estimates. Particular attention is given to counting functions of prime numbers and multiplicative arithmetic functions. Both real variable ("elementary") and complex variable ("analytic") methods are employed. The reader is assumed to have knowledge of elementary number theory (abstract algebra will also do) and real and complex analysis. Specialized analytic techniques, including transform and Tauberian methods, are developed as needed.

THE UNITED STATES-SINGAPORE FREE TRADE AGREEMENT
Highlights and Insights
edited by Tommy Koh
(Director, Institute of Policy Studies, Singapore) &
Chang Li Lin
(Research Associate, Institute of Policy Studies, Singapore)

On 1 January 2004, the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA) came into force. This book captures some of the personal insights thrown up in the negotiations which lasted two years and offers highlights and analyses of the USSFTA. Contributors to the volume include the Chief Negotiators of the two delegations, the US and Singapore Ambassadors, key negotiators and close observers of the process. Together, they addressed such questions as the rationale for the FTA, the benefits it brings to the two countries and its impact on ASEAN, APEC and the WTO. Selected key documents pertaining to the USSFTA process have also been included, making it a comprehensive reader on the story behind the negotiations of the USSFTA.
