World Scientific announces Joint Venture with Shanghai Century Publishing Group

World Scientific is pleased to announce our joint venture collaboration with Shanghai Century Publishing Group (SCPG), Shanghai's top book publisher. SCPG is a leader in many sectors of the Chinese book market and is an influential publisher in sections ranging from higher education to mass-market publishing. The joint venture hopes to draw upon both WS's and Shanghai Century's strengths in Asian Studies to publish a series of books that provide unparalleled insight into China's economy, society and culture.

The joint venture aims to focus on various aspects of China studies, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The first book to emerge from this collaboration is an English translation of China's Economy—Rural Reform and Agricultural Development. Focusing on the role played by agriculture and the peasant class in China's land reforms, China's Economy is an important, interdisciplinary volume on economic development in China. It is also the first volume of Shanghai Century's renowned “Developing China” series, which has Fudan University's Distinguished Professor Deng Zhenglai as its series editor.

Dr K K Phua, Chairman of WS, had the following to say about the collaboration: "The books that provide valuable insights to China are mostly written in Chinese and this limits their reach due to the language barrier. World Scientific is happy to bridge that gap in jointly publishing these translations so that many others can benefit from the wealth of knowledge and information. We look forward to work closely together with Shanghai Century on other similar projects to give these valuable publications their well-deserved attention."

World Scientific is proud to announce that it will be partnering the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities to jointly publish a landmark volume on the Albert Einstein Memorial Lectures. The volume will contain selected lectures from the distinguished Einstein Memorial Lecture series, which was inaugurated in 1980 and features prominent scholars speaking on topics spanning particle physics and history. This forthcoming volume will be edited by Professors Raphael Mechoulam and Jacob Bekensteim from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, prominent scientists in the fields of medical chemistry and theoretical physics respectively.

Founded in 1961, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities is the pre-eminent organisation for Israeli scholarship in the natural sciences and the humanities. On top of maintaining contacts with the international academic community, the Academy aims to foster intellectual excellence within Israeli academia and fund important research. It counts among its members around 100 of Israel’s most distinguished academics in the natural sciences and humanities.

You can Soon Read Our E-Books on Kindle and iPad

World Scientific has signed agreements with both Amazon and Apple, the two biggest purveyors of e-books, to make select titles available via Amazon's Kindle device and Apple's iPad and iPhone by the end of 2010. Content available to these mobile devices will be priced lower than their paperback equivalents, and will mostly consist of science and economics trade titles.

E-book publishing will not only provide a new avenue for book sales, but is also an excellent source of publicity for World Scientific's authors and their works. The phenomenal success of the Kindle device, together with the iPhone and iPad's tremendous popularity, will surely enable the ideas of our authors to reach new audiences. World Scientific is excited to make this key step into the world of e-publishing, and looks forward to making even more titles available soon.
