Employee of the Year Award 1997

The Employee of the Year Award is presented to a World Scientific staff member each year, in recognition of their superlative contribution to our success. As a token of the company's appreciation, the winner also receives one extra week of paid leave, a return ticket to London with accommodation provided, and a US$350 cash allowance.

Employee of the Year for 1997 is Production Supervisor Ms Elsie Tan. She has now been with the company for almost 12 years, having joined the Singapore office in 1986 as a Computer Typesetter. She was first promoted in 1994 to the position of Senior Computer Typesetter, and then again to Production Supervisor in 1996. Presently, Elsie's duties include updating and maintaining the company's website, as well as co-ordinating software applications with the typesetting team.

We were able to catch Elsie for a quick interview shortly after she received the award:

On the award: I can't believe it has happened twice to the same department, but of course, it is a very pleasant surprise.

On working at World Scientific: I enjoy the experience it gives me in my field of interest — computer technology.

On the future of the company: I'm particularly looking forward to World Scientific achieving ISO certification in the near future. Also, the expansion of the overseas offices may give the staff more opportunity for shortterm assignment abroad.
