The Press relocated in March 1999 to a more spacious and well-equipped office at Covent Garden, the heart of London's West End and the center of UK publishing. With the Press relocated to the same building as WSPC UK, the editorial and marketing links between the two companies have been further strengthened.

Growing...

The Press continues to grow in terms of the number of titles published annually. An important book series entitled “Environmental Science and Management” and a new journal, the Journal of Environmental Assessment Policy and Management, were launched last year. Other key publications of 1999 include The Mathematics of Natural Catastrophes (Woo) and Mineralogy in the System of Earth Sciences (Constantinascu). (See report on book launches below.)

  • Lecture Notes on Fullerene Chemistry (Taylor)
  • Earthquake-Resistant Design of Masonry Buildings (Tomazevic)
  • Enjoy Writing Your Science Thesis or Dissertation! (Holtom and Fisher)
  • Surgical Talk (Goldberg and Stanley)
  • Tuberculosis (Porter and Grange)
  • Numerical Ocean Circulation Modelling (Haidvogel and Beckmann)
  • Chemical Thermodynamics for Metals and Materials (Lee)
  • The Haemodynamic Effects of Nitric Oxide (Mathie and Griffith)
  • The Legal, Engineering, Environmental and Social Perspectives of Surface Mining Law and Reclamation by Landfilling (Aston)
  • Materials Degradation and Its Control by Surface Engineering (Batchelor, Lam and Chandrasekaran)
  • Mechanisms of Gene Expression (Weinzierl)

Two Book Launches...

The first launch was in November for Professor Emil Constantinascu’s Mineralogy in the System of Earth Sciences, a collection of his most famous papers to celebrate his 60th birthday. The launch was held at the Earth Sciences Department of the University of Cambridge and was attended by faculty members of the University, invited guests, representatives of the Romanian Government and the Royal Society.

The second launch was for Professor Gordon Woo’s The Mathematics of Natural Catastrophes. It was held at the Earth Sciences Gallery in the Natural History Museum, and was attended by eminent scientists in the earth sciences, mathematicians, representatives of environmental consultancies and the financial sectors, as well as friends and family of the author.

Excellence...

The Press continues to strive toward excellence as a publisher of scientific, technical and medical books, with increasing monthly sales figures and a very active front list. This pursuit confirms the Press' commitment to providing top quality content to meet the needs of the scientific community worldwide and remain established as a publisher of high quality books and journals.

Future...

The new millennium year will see more key publications from the company: Candid Science (Hargittai), The Transuranium People (Hoffman, Ghiorso and Seaborg), Biomimetic Oxidations Catalysed by Transition Metal Complexes (Meunier), Dynamic Vision: From Images to Face Recognition (Gong, McKenna and Psarrou) and Air Pollution and Health (Ayres, Maynard and Richards), to name but a few. This year will also see the launch of two new engineering journals: International Journal of Computational Intelligence and Applications and International Journal of Computational Engineering Science. The Press has also initiated a new program to expand the number of titles in Popular Science and “Science as Entertainment” and in this connection, Professor C Djerassi’s well-received play The Immaculate Misconception will be published later in the year.
