Harnessing the Digital Front
In recent years, World Scientific
has been steadily developing
its electronic book publishing
program. Today, we have over
2,500 ebooks and we will soon add
another 2,000 titles to bring the total
to around 4,500 ebooks. Universities
and research organizations that count
World Scientific ebooks among their
collections include ETH Zurich,
Academia Sinica in Taiwan, Monash
University, University of Auckland,
and the Institute of Defence Analyses
in Virginia, USA.
Our ebooks can also be accessed
through major aggregators like
NetLibrary, eBrary, MyiLibrary and
EBL. We are continuously seeking
new partners in distribution and
sales, as well as hosting.
Technological advances
have changed the way we access
information. Digital content will be
the way forward now not only for its
accessibility and timeliness, but also
for the following benefits offered to
information users:
- e-journals and ebooks provide
reference linking that cannot be
done on traditional print media
- e-journals provide search
features
- publishers are acting as librarians
for many libraries. Most libraries
prefer data to be kept at the
publishers’ servers
- ebooks and e-journals do not
require shelf-space, building
and manpower, which is a costsaving
measure
- a single ebook or ejournal
subscription can be used across
the entire campus, even multiple
campuses
Besides developing our program
for ebook sales, we are also working
with various partners to develop
capabilities in using the content that
has already been digitized to be used
as a marketing tool. Google, with
whom we partner on the Google Book
Search program, has announced that
it will be licensing the Book Search
technology to independent online
book retailers. World Scientific titles
will be included, and soon, customers
will be able to page through part
of World Scientific titles online
when they visit retailers like Books-A-Million. Along the same vein,
major US book retailer Barnes &
Noble has unveiled its "See Inside"
program to better harness the power
of digital content as a marketing
tool. World Scientific is proud to lend
support to this venture by enabling
its titles to be included.

Journal Papers Get Published on Web First
Authors of papers accepted by World Scientific journals can look
forward to faster publication of their work, thanks to plans to
introduce streamlined e-publishing procedures.
To be launched for selected journals within the next few
months, the new system will see papers enter production as soon as they have
been accepted instead of after they have been assigned to a specific journal
issue, which is the current protocol. This will cut the delays that sometimes
result when journals have papers queuing for publication. Articles will be
posted at the journal's website once author corrections have been made to
the proof, so the text will be in its final form. These articles will not yet have
volume and page numbers, but they can be cited by their "Digital Object
Identifier" (DOI). For more information on DOIs, do visit www.doi.org.
The first journal to be on trial under this new system will be the
International Journal of Modern Physics D (IJMPD). Look out for the
"Forthcoming papers" link on the journal homepage

World Scientific constantly strives to provide the best possible service to
its authors and journal subscribers. This initiative is part of the company's
ongoing program to enhance the author experience and to provide highquality
electronic content. Comments are welcome and may be sent to editor@wspc.com.
