Business as Usual at
The Frankfurt Book Fair 2008
Known as the global meeting place for the book
world, World Scientific made its 26th showing
at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2008 which was
held from October 15 to 19, 2008. As in
previous years, World Scientific proudly displayed its
latest and bestselling titles in the STM hall.
The exhibition was a good opportunity to meet up
with our global partners, especially those from various
parts of Europe and Asia. Despite the global financial
crisis, it was generally agreed that growth potential still
abound particularly in the Indian sub-continent, as well
as other opportunities in the Middle East and South
America.
Many digital initiatives were presented, including
concepts related to print-on-demand services, and how to
better monetize content that have already been digitized.
With electronic books gaining popularity, discussions
were focused mainly on how to penetrate into markets like
Brazil, Spain, Italy and Eastern Europe. Other initiatives
such as using digitized content as a marketing tool leading
to either print or ebook sales were presented by several
partners like Google, NetLibrary and Books24x7, etc.
On the electronic journals front, discussion was
largely about enabling direct linkages of our online
content with document delivery services offered from
third parties such as the French and German National
Research Centers. This is to facilitate seamless, realtime
fulfillment of journal article deliveries from their
end. Our meeting with Chemical Abstract Services also
revealed that eight of our journals are priority to the
CAS's SciFinder and STN family of products.

The Boom in Translation
at BIBF 2008
World Scientific Beijing Office attended
the 15th Beijing International Book Fair
(BIBF) which was held from September
1 to 4, 2008 in Tianjin International
Exhibition Center. It was the first time that BIBF was
held outside Beijing since its inaugural exhibition in 1986.
Congregating about 1,300 exhibitors from 50 countries,
BIBF is the biggest book fair in Asia. While the visitorship
to World Scientific's booth were largely librarians,
academics, researchers and industry professionals, our
titles were well-acclaimed for their quality of content and
production value.
BIBF has created the opportunities for China and
foreign publishing houses to develop new collaborations
and strengthen current partnerships. In fact, more than
20 of China's publishers have shown keen interests to
acquire the translation rights of World Scientific titles
as well as to forge new collaborations with World
Scientific.

World Scientific Navigates Ahead at the 31st ICCE 2008
World Scientific attended the International Conference on Coastal
Engineering (ICCE) from August 31 to September 5, 2008. Held every
two years and already in its 31st edition, ICCE remains a major event in
the coastal engineering calendar and World Scientific, being the largest
publisher of books in the field, has published the proceedings for many years.
The 2008 conference was held in Hamburg — a major port of Germany where
significant research in the field is carried out. The venue was the grand and spacious
Central Congress Hamburg, and the local organizer was Prof Holger Schuetrumpff.
According to the organizers, approximately 700 participants registered.
The World Scientific book booth generated considerable interest from conference
participants as World Scientific's UK staff Roberta Cucuzza and Lance Sucharov were
busy establishing new contacts and sealing collaboration deals with authors who are
leaders in the field. Our upcoming titles such as Handbook of Coastal and Ocean
Engineering and Coastal and Estuarine Processes by Peter Nielsen received wide interest
from the conference delegates.
Overall, the 2008 edition of the ICCE conference was very successful for WSPC.
Many projects were discussed, agreed upon and commissioned; book sales also
showed that WSPC is still the leading publisher in the ever-growing field of coastal
engineering.
