SURGICAL COMPLICATIONS
Diagnosis and Treatment
edited by Nadey S Hakim & Vassilios E Papalois (Hammersmith Hospital London, UK)

As Professor Owen H Wangensteen, one of the greatest academic surgeons of the 20th century, said: "You are a true surgeon from the moment you are able to deal with your complications." Prompt and accurate diagnosis, as well as effective treatment, of surgical complications is one of the most important elements of surgical practice. This is today more important than at any other time, since over the last 20 years we have witnessed the development of new surgical sub-specialties, the performing of complicated operations in very challenging patients, the introduction of new technologies in surgical practice and, last but not least, an increasing interest in monitoring the quality, medicolegal implications, and ethical dimensions of surgical practice and malpractice. As surgical complications have been presented briefly and sporadically in various books and only as a small part of chapters dealing with surgical techniques, there is a pressing need for a modern textbook dealing with the diagnosis, treatment, auditing, medico-legal implications and ethical problems related to surgical complications.

THE RULES OF GLOBALIZATION
Case Book
edited by Rawi Abdelal (Harvard University, USA)

This is a book about the politics of the global economy — about how firms prosper by understanding those politics, or fail by misunderstanding them. Understanding the politics of globalization may once have been a luxury; it is now, for most high-level managers, simply a necessity. The book contains cases which can be used by instructors and students to build a framework of analysis that enables them to understand the challenges of international trade and investment and master the opportunities they represent. This framework is based on a systematic evaluation of the informal and formal rules that define markets for goods, services, and capital. These insightful cases allow for evaluation of: the political and economic origins of our current era of globalization and how the rules that constrain and enable firms are changing; the impact of governments' policies and which tools are available for predicting, avoiding, or even employing the long arm of the government; and the influence of informal and formal institutions on opportunities for success in international finance and trade.

Journal of Multiscale Modelling (JMM)
Editor-in-Chief
F M H Aliabadi
(Imperial College London)

Multiscale Modelling is a relatively new research field which has in a short time had a significant impact on many scientific and engineering disciplines including material science, fluid dynamics, chemistry, and biology. In these areas problems are often multiphysics and have important features at multiple scales, particularly multiple spatial scales.
