Dawson Day
11 June 2008
London
Dawson Day took place at London' s Armoury House, home of the honorable Artillery Company which is the 2nd oldest regiment in the British Army. Guests were treated to tea, coffee and biscuits and were presented a "goody bag" containing gifts from the various exhibitors at this event organized by Dawson Books, a long-established company specializing in the supply of books and complementary services to libraries around the world.

Here's an account of Dawson Day by Elaine Lee and Kasia Strojwas from WSPC's London office:

"Overall this was a good opportunity to speak to librarians on an informal level. We had produced a special selection flyer for libraries and placed them into the delegate bags. There was lot of interest in the Anatomy Workbook set and was remarked by one librarian that one of the key features of Dawson Day was the opportunity to see the physical product and consider a book they may not have done otherwise.

Topics in discussion were e-books. A catalog of e-books was requested several times. Although we had the e-resources pack which contained the e-books flyer, the librarians wanted a catalog of the actual titles. Librarians were also asked who the decision-makers were at their institutions. All responded that it was mainly the professors who made suggestions to the subject librarians who then placed the order.

Although the event was to meet the librarians, Elaine felt that what has been gained by attending Dawson Day over the years is actually the fact that it has raised awareness of WSPC to senior staff at Dawson. It had enabled them to speak to each other on an informal basis."

Special Libraries Association 2008 Annual Conference
June 15-18, 2008
Seattle, Washington
World Scientific's Kate McDonnell attended the Special Libraries Association (SLA) 2008 Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington, where more than 3000 guests turned up. The SLA is an association of corporate, academic and government librarians and information professionals from around the world. The SLA conference is held each year to highlight the latest library techniques and research, and provide opportunities for librarians to network as well as to learn about new products and services. Kate who turns roving reporter that day fills us in on World Scientific's participation at the SLA conference:

“Prior to the conference, a postcard featuring World Scientific e-Resources was created and sent to all pre-registered attendees. The postcard featured the new Nobel Lecture series and highlighted the chance to win a $25 American Express Gift.

The exhibit hall was open for 2 full days and two ˝ days and a number of other publishing companies were present. Those who took part included Wiley, McGraw-Hill, Springer, Sage, Oxford University Press, and Elsevier.

Our presence at this conference is so important for us in terms of branding and making librarians aware of our products. Also of importance at this years’ conference was our sponsorship of the Physics-Astronomy-Mathematics (PAM) Division’s Physics Roundtable for the second year in a row.

In addition, I attended the roundtable where World Scientific was again thanked for its support. I hope to continue our sponsorship of this event and will look into sponsoring other events as well. I noticed a definite increase in the number of librarians interested in our e-book information this year and I believe this will continue, as budgets get tighter.

Overall, the SLA conference was very successful. This year was our third year exhibiting at SLA and the response from librarians reaffirms the importance of our presence at this conference."
